Not exactly new in 2017, this year sees Japandi style move from fad to fixture as it cements its place as a long-term look we’re loving in interiors everywhere.

A level up from our much loved streamlined Scandi style, Japandi takes the best of Nordic simplicity and adds a dash of oriental drama, darkening some timbers and deepening pastel shades to add depth and maturity to the conventional Scandi palette of oak, white, light grey, pale pink and mint green.

Still utilising a cool colour palette, Japandi swaps pale grey for mid and charcoal tones, trades palest pink for a deeper blush, swaps mint green for forest tones, moves from beige to chocolate and adds elements of black to replace some of the paler timber picks.

The key to nailing the look is not to ditch the light and bright Scandi features altogether, but to trade a statement pale piece for a darker timber tone, to switch white dining chairs for black or to opt for a glass and dark timber or metal table in place of an oak option.

Just like Scandi style, Japandi is still rooted in minimalism, with clean lines and an uncluttered style with few decorative accents hallmarks of this latest look.

As for what those decorative accents are? On walls, artwork moves from abstract to realistic, with nature-inspired photos taking pride of place. On sofas, floors and beds, textured layers stand out, with shaggy throws and fluffy cushions strewn atop cool grey couches or organic timber floors. Finally, ,add a touch of greenery, real if you like, fake if you fancy, especially in the form of branches, bamboo or hanging vines in lieu of blooms.

If your place is wall-to-wall Scandi, don’t despair. To progress to Japandi just requires a few simple swaps and easy updates, check out these popular picks below to inject Japandi elegance at yours:
